Summer 2008 Program in Cuernavaca, Mexico

This course will focus on Mexican migration to the U.S., migration's effect on the global economy, the role of "homeland" in the immigrant experience, differences in experience between genders, the meaning of citizenship, and the transformation of national borders. Special attention will be paid to the impact of Mexican migration on Mexico. Cuernavaca's proximity to indigenous cultures and Mexico City have made it a mecca of foreign travel and attracted artists from around the world. Excursions will be planned to major cultural sites, including the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, the ruins at Teotihuacan and Xochicalco, Bellas Artes, the Basilica de Guadalupe, the Templo Mayor, and the Palacio de Cortes. Excursions to the major cultural sites will be planned in conjunction with LLS 442 / GWS 445 / SPAN 442.

The course studies the iconographic figures La Malinche, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, the Virgin of Guadalupe, and the Aztec deity Coyolxauhqui that U.S. Latina feminism employs in the construction of historical narratives based on women's contributions to culture. Students will visit major Mexican museums and pre-Columbian sites where these feminist icons have been canonized. Excursions will be planned to major cultural sites, including the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, the ruins at Teotihuacan and Xochicalco, Bellas Artes, the Basilica de Guadalupe, the Templo Mayor, and the Palacio de Cortes. Excursions to the major cultural sites will be planned in conjunction with LLS 220 / SOC 221.
