TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS
50% time appointment
2008-2009 academic year

The Latina/Latino Studies Program is advertising for several Teaching Assistants at 50% time for the 2008-2009 school year. The Teaching Assistant will assist with the instruction of LLS 100: Introduction to Latina/Latino Studies, a large lecture course with discussion sections, among other large lecture courses. A tuition and fee waiver is possible, depending on the applicant’s graduate program. Those selected for the position/s will be expected to work 20 hours per week. The position begins August 25, 2008 and extends to May 15, 2009. However, the applicant must be available prior to the beginning of the term for orientation and class preparation. The applicant must also be available for finals and grading at the end of the academic year.

Job Description:

* Attend the campus-wide orientation for teaching assistants conducted by the Office of Instructional Resources, at least once. Attend all departmental teaching orientations.
* Attend CITES workshops related to Illinois Compass and use of instructional technology.
* Attend all lectures and teach all assigned discussion sections.
* Hold office hours for students for 3 hours per week.
* Be responsible for grading examinations and papers and/or for assisting the professor or course supervisor in grading. Lead review sessions for course examinations.
* Generally assist the professor and/or course supervisor with class functions.
* Be familiar with university, departmental, and course policies on grading, exam scheduling, grievance procedures, plagiarism, and other matters outlined in the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct.
* Attend a pre-semester one week Latina/Latino Studies practicum for which students will receive 1-2 graduate credit hours.

Desired Qualifications:

* Current enrollment and good standing in a graduate program at UIUC
* Expertise/interest in Latina/o Studies and/or Ethnic Studies
* Experience teaching and facilitating discussion sections
* Strong communication skills

UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE OUTREACH COORDINATOR POSITIONS

GRADUATE OUTREACH COORDINATOR - 2008-2009


POSITION TITLE: Graduate Outreach Coordinator, Latina/Latino Studies Program, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).

DESCRIPTION: Serve as liaison to graduate and professional students at UIUC who are interested in Latina/Latino Studies, and assist Director and Associate Director in developing academic programs and initiatives for students pursuing graduate work in Latina/Latino-related research.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Organize a Latina/Latino Studies graduate student reception
• Maintain graduate student database
• Publicize Latina/Latino Studies events to graduate students
• Organize and plan brownbag presentations by graduate students throughout the year
• Organize a UIUC Latino Studies graduate student conference
• Organize workshops for graduate students (e.g., first-year survival, grant/proposal writing, preparing for exams, the job market)
• Represent the Program at campus events (e.g., Graduate College events, conferences, etc.)
• Serve as student liaison between the Latina/Latino Studies Program and La Casa Cultural Latina
• Publicize funding opportunities to graduate students

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have good leadership, communication and organizational skills. Applicants with academic preparation in Latina/Latino Studies preferred. The graduate student must be in good academic standing and making progress toward the degree.

SALARY: Ten (10) hours per week, hourly rate to be determined. This position does not include a tuition and fee waiver.
