Graduate Student Conference

The Latina/Latino Studies Graduate Student Conference is a biennial trans-disciplinary conference sponsored by the Latino Studies Program. The conference is entirely organized by University of Illinois graduate students. The first national conference of its kind, the Latina/Latino Studies Graduate Student Conference provides students engaged in research in the area of Latina/Latino Studies to share their work with colleagues from other research universities around the country. The title of the first conference (April 18-19, 2003) was “Latinidad in the New Millennium.” The conference highlighted the commonalities, differences, and diversity of experiences within the Latina/o population in the United States. Education; cultural representations in theatre, festivals, and the media; transnationalism; networks; and citizenship and border identity were some of the issues examined during the conference.

The second conference, “Exploring and Challenging Fronteras in the Midwest and Beyond,” February 25-27, 2005, focused on the historical and cultural processes that affect Latinas/os in the Midwest and the rest of the United States. The conference addressed building community; citizenship; education; identity politics; immigration and transnationalism; issues of social justice; race, class, gender and sexuality; and reclaiming space, among other topics.

The third and most recent conference, “Aquí Luchamos, Aquí Estamos: Reaffirming Our Commitment to Activism and Resistance through Scholarship,” was held February 23-25, 2007. The focus of this year’s conference on activism and scholarship was in keeping with the theme of the Latina/Latino Studies Program 10th anniversary celebration.
